Black Girl Watching 07.28.22

Yes. So soon! Because I saw

NOPE (2022)

And I want to discuss it in a non-spoilery way. Should you see this movie at the theater? Yes obviously. The sound editing (this matters) is fantastic. Is it scary? Not in a lasting manner. I slept just fine after and I say this after months of unease from US. Is it good? Yes? But good is relative. It is good in the sense that 1) it is a satisfying movie that is pretty straightforward yet layered and gives you things to talk about IF you are the type of person that likes to discuss things like layers in movies 2) Keke Palmer is in it 3) there is no ambiguous ending. Will I watch it again? Maybe once.

Having said that, I have spent a lot of online time reading people’s theories and what means what and stuff. This is not Tenet. It is not convoluted to the point of just not making sense (I am watching Tenet right now and while I get it, I am so mad at Nolan for this still because nobody gets time travel right but man these fight scenes are amazing). Some theories make sense and some I feel like Jordan Peele would read some and be like “that is interesting but that is not what I meant”. Like on the scene in Get Out when Rose is eating the Froot Loops separate from the milk and the film students were like “oh my the symbolism from separating the whites from the colors” and Jordan was like “no but it’s just creepy to eat cereal that way?” I love it.

Mythic Quest S2 – Apple+. I finally finished Mythic Quest and S2 is good but it didn’t have the same heart for me? I think that’s the best way to put it. Or I got more heart from the first season cause I binged it. It’s still a great, funny show and I’m glad they released a trailer for S3 this fall.

Good Luck To You, Leo Grande (2021) – Emma Thompson is a widow seeking companionship from a younger, attractive sex worker. The movie takes place over their meetings in a hotel room over a period of time, which I thought would be boring? but it was well-acted and not long and ended at a nice place. They cover sex work (obviously) and women aging, and not liking your children or parents as people. I liked it enough and I was even happier to watch it on Hulu on my couch, but I would have spent a Saturday afternoon at the indie theater to watch it.

Tuca & Bertie S3E1 (Adult Swim) – I’m so glad these silly ass birds are back. There is a meme where voice actors are like “I have worked at my craft. I am becoming a whole new person by my voice. I am acting” and the famous actors doing voice are like “hey y’all it’s me!” and that is Tiffany Haddish (Tuca).

Reading

A Mirror Mended – Alix E. Harrow. Alix is taking a spin on classic fairytales and this is the second novella in the series. The first is Sleeping Beauty (A Spindle Splintered) and this is Snow White. I would read Alix’s high school essays so I am completely biased in judging her work aside from being wholly obsessed.

Watchlist

  • Not Okay (2022) – Hulu July 29
  • Bullet Train (2022) – Theaters August Aug 5. I know the Japanese creator of the original movie is like “this is not what I made” but Brad Pitt and Bryan Tyree Henry are in it and I am weak.

Best Thing on the Internet

DO YOU HEAR ME DO YOU FEEL ME?

I am looking for a low-stakes background show because summer TV is ass so I am taking suggestions. Maybe like a little Sweet Magnolias or something like that on Netflix?? Me and Addy are still watching The Flash but it is not low stakes at this point (mid S2 protect Barry Allen AT ALL COSTS) and I accidentally started Rick and Morty again because I watched Seinfeld over again.

  1. LMAO @ your Bullet Train note. I’m currently background watching Grand Crew for the… 4th time? Interspersed with Living Single.

  2. Re: Tenet. I watched it after listening to a movie podcast that recommended “Don’t try to understand it; just let the spectacle wash over you,” so I liked it. It was like an overly complicated Bond movie with better action sequences.

I, too, will see Bullet Train in a theater because Brad Pitt smirking and kicking ass is enough for me.
