Black GIrl Watching 07.21.22

Watching

Ms. Marvel S1 (Disney+). We finished Ms. Marvel. Addy learned a lot about the British partition of India and Pakistan (everyone did). We love the Khans. Normally I’m over plucky teens (that’s why I didn’t care about Kate Bishop on Hawkeye) but I let Kamala slide cause she’s honestly the first Pakistani Muslim superhero I’ve ever seen on TV. And I said we love the Khans. And they make a point to call the police racist (as much as Disney would let them).

The Bear S1 (Hulu via FX) – Twitter was buzzing, BUZZING, about The Bear. Like really all I knew is one of those kids from Shameless was a chef in Chicago. That’s all you need to know. I almost quit after the first episode because it is intense. Someone described it “had the same dramatic tension as a war movie but they’re like making sandwiches”. That said I really liked it. It’s beautifully shot (this matters to me). They’re amazing food photography. Episode 7 is so well done you will forget you have a telephone to look at. It’s 8 episodes averaging 30 mins. You’ll be done over the weekend. Watch it.

Loot S1 E1, E2 (Apple TV) – Maya Rudolph divorces Adam Scott and ends up with like 80 Billion dollars and chooses to spend her new free time at her charity run by MJ Rodriguez. Except she’s so rich she’s just clueless and hilarious. And the soundtrack is fantastic.

Spiderhead (2022) – Netflix. Okay so whew. This movie is not good. Chris Hemsworth is a scientist running an experimental prison and does experiments on that kid from Top Gun that I didn’t see and Jurnee Smollet. Everyone must have been pandemic bored to agree to do this movie. My expectations for Netflix movies are that they are the highest definition possible and they have people I’ve seen before. And they keep me busy for an hour and forty minutes at least. This met those expectations. And Hemsworth is beautiful.

Only Murders in the Building S2 E1-3 (Hulu) – it’s literally more of the same. If you liked S1 you’ll like S2. So far from what I can tell anyway.

The 355 (2021) – Imagine if they made a movie about the world’s best spies except they couldn’t stop talking about how hard women have it. And they put Sebastian Stan in it for eye candy. That’s The 355. I appreciate Jessica Chastain’s efforts but it was just fine. And free on Prime! (people on Twitter call Jessica Chastain “small Christiana Hendricks”. Bryce Dallas Howard is the “medium”.)

Reading

So sometimes when I am writing a thing I’m like “wow this is exactly the same as everything else I’ve ever typed” and I scrap it. But then I go and ready the 5th book from an author that’s the same as everything else I’ve read from them. Like I seek it out.

Anyway I just finished Haven and Sanctuary by Rebekah Weatherspoon. They’re 1 and 2 in a “bearded and bondage” trilogy. I’m pausing before continuing on to book 3. Bless the library. I did not like the second one.

Watchlist

  • Tuca & Bertie S3 – S3 just started and I am kinda offended Adult Swim didn’t text me personally and remind me the new season was out. Fortunately, it’s on HBO as well.
  • The Sandman S1 – Netflix August 5. Neil Gaiman adaptations are always phenomenal even if I’ve never read the source material.
  • Worst Person In the World (2021) – It’s finally streaming on something I pay for (Hulu) so I’m going to watch.
  • Parallel Mothers (2021) – Another foreign language movie I wanted to watch but waited for something I pay for to stream it. So thanks Starz. I just have to remember to watch before they shuffle it and I lose track.
  • Vengeance (2022) – BJ Novak made a movie about podcasting in Texas?? True Crime podcast dark comedy is a genre now. I would wait until this came on something I paid for but it’s Texas and Issa Rae is in it so I might slide on down to the Alamo Drafthouse one Sunday morning and see it.
  • Nope (2022) – Nope comes out this weekend and I am already terrified. I’m not a big horror person but I am mentally fragile these days. Not in an alarming way but i mean how are you not mentally fragile right now? Anyway, I enjoyed Get Out but something about Us was mentally terrifying to me. Just like the White Bear episode of Black Mirror that made me quit the show for six months. I don’t think Nope will have me that bad, but what do I know. I’m going Saturday.

RIP

Jak Knight passed away last week. He was 28 and on Bust Down, a show that I discussed frequently. I’m still sitting with it. It’s so sad. Take care of yourselves as best as you can right now.

  1. This was the perfect summation of The 355. Lol. I’d add “fashions” to the plus list because I had a whole Pinterest board of Chastain’s 355 fits (the turtleneck/leather skirt combo at the end…I still dream about that skirt).

And I wanted the dark romance version of that Sebastian Stan plot. I’m still thinking about him waving that gun and saying “Do as you’re told.”
