Day 08 – News of the World
I’m going to break format.
Saturday night I learned via Twitter that Hannibal Burress had a new special up on Netflix. He’s funny to me. You should check it out. Anyway, he talks a bit about how you don’t know about something that came before you. Much like how I had to explain Beetlejuice to Addy because I had on a t-shirt and we spent the next four nights watching Beetlejuice. No complaints, just you don’t know something exists until something you already know tells you about it.
Right, so Hannibal was saying how he was a little kid watching WCW and Hulk Hogan’s intro music was Jimi Hendrix and Hannibal tells his dad “this is some really good music. This Jimi guy might be famous soon because of all this exposure Hulk Hogan is giving him.”
I first really knew of Queen because of Wayne’s World because I was born in the 80’s and raised in the 90’s and Mike Myers and Dana Carvey were my life on Saturday Night Live even though I’m sure I didn’t get 90% of the jokes. You HAD to watch to know what to repeat in school on Monday.
Then a few (ok maybe like 12) years ago me and T (sister) decided we really need to get into some classic films because we know of them but only from like The Simpsons. So we watched A Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, etc.
And after the Superbowl commercial for…whatever it was with the sheep singing Queen I figured why not pick Queen for a day.
I went with News of the World because it was the first one that popped up, but also it starts with We Will Rock You.
WHY HAVEN’T I BEEN LISTENING TO QUEEN ALL OF MY LIFE?
I very much appreciate classic rock and clearly Queen is classic but it’s not just heavy bass and face melting guitar. It’s really just Freddie Mercury. Maybe cause in true hipster fashion it’s really just four guys on instruments and Freddie singing and it’s great and not over produced and it wasn’t leaked online and I didn’t have to read tweets and think pieces about it? No. It’s just Freddie mostly.
Anyway, listen to this.
Freddie is a god.
Party on.
