Day 04 – And The War Came
The Who:
Shakey Graves is a dude from Austin that does this whole one-man band setup. Like he sits on a drum that he taps with his left heel and a tambourine on his right foot and it’s some primo Austin stuff. See: (the video is 7 mins so I mean you can just skip to the middle)
The Why:
Kim told me I should check out Shakey Graves because well I talk openly about my music preferences on the internet and will listen when people suggest new music. I favorited some Tumblr post the other day about not taking for granted the people who put you on new music. Anyway, I did a quick search to find out he’s from ATX and that’s basically enough for anyone to like anyone.
The Deets:
He’s really rock/bluegrass/folk rock. It’s more Ray Lamontange than Alabama Shakes but still somewhere in between. Maybe a little bit of Beck?? If those words don’t mean anything to you then refer to the video a little higher up for proper reference.
Verdict:
This music is good background music for work or when I’m cleaning but the songs I really liked the best feature Esme Patterson, who I’ve been meaning to check out anyway. Their voices work together really well and there were 3 of them on the CD (streaming on Amazon Prime. I mean it’s really winning.)

Day 05 – Our Version of Events
The Who:
Emile Sande is Scottish singer/songwriter that Wikipedia is telling me is soul/R&B, but I am telling you is a soul-lite or souly pop. I suppose because she’s brown they’re throwing it in. Fine.
The Why:
Emile Sande is who I typed in when I was looking for Esme Patterson and I ended up listening to her cause I recognized the name and clearly wanted to know more about her.
The Deets:
They play her song “Next to Me” on the Pop channels that Addy and I like on XM. I like it because I like basically all souly pop singers from the UK. She’s a singer/songwriter and has some really good lyrics in the songs. I think I’m calling it soul-lite music because her voice is in the higher octaves and doesn’t have the super soul sound to it. And it’s NOT on Amazon and now I’m seriously considering paying for Spotify or at least for a free month trial to get through #NewMusicMonth
Verdict:
Not to say I didn’t like it because I really did and it reminded me of my beloved Paloma Faith who’s also UK souly pop and gets no shine. Anyway this is the kind of music that would come on at the coffee shop and I would sing all the words and people would be like “I really like this song” and Shazam it.

I'm listening to Shakey Graves now. I think I like it. Him? Whatever. I like.
