Black Girl Watching 03.09.23

Watching

The Perfect Match S1 – Netflix. Netflix combined all the trash dating shows I watch into one super trash dating show to watch. They stick these singles in a house and make them pair up to see which would be the perfect match. They give “compatibility challenges” and then Nick Lachey pops in to check on them and the compatible couple chooses new singles to come in and mix it up. It’s top tier trash watching. However, I’ve noticed that in all of these Netflix shows they stick a Black girl or two in there so they can’t be called out for not having a diverse cast. However, they do not seem to pick singles that have any interest in dating Black girls. Even the Black dudes don’t see it for them. The first season of Love Is Blind with Lauren and Cameron was a complete fluke because the Black girls are not finding love on any other show.

AntMan 3 (2023) – Right after we left, I called AntMan “Honey I Shrunk the Avenger does a Star War at the Rick and Morty Citadel.” Because that’s what it was. I have not given up on the MCU and I do not expect anything to top Avengers 3 or 4, or Thor: Ragnarok. So with that level of expectations, everything in Phase 4&5 has been entertaining and fine. Also JONATHAN MAJORS THO.

I’m also still watching Shrinking, Girls5Eva, Love After Lockup, The Leftovers, and Poker Face. Comfort watching Seinfeld and 30 Rock.

Reading

Fake It Till You Bake It – Jamie Wesley. A very cute romcom about a girl who denies the proposal on a reality show and has a meet-cute with a pro football player who owns a cupcake bakery. Very cute and lite. 4.5/5

Mermaid of Black Conch – Monique Roffey. In the summer of 1976, some fishermen catch a mermaid on the coast of Black Conch (fictional??? island in the Caribbean). It’s mostly about love (romantic/parent and child) and jealousy and obviously mermaids. It’s always nice to read about a time before cell phones anyway. And island life makes you hate capitalism. 4.5/5

Memorial – Bryan Washington. Mike and Benson are on the brink of a breakup when Mike decides to leave Houston to visit his dying father in Japan but it just so happens that the day he is leaving is the day his mother is flying in to stay for a while. It’s…a well written book but the characters are such a mess I didn’t like the story of it? A mess in a good way that they seem like real people just unlikeable people. Houston is very well described. The cultures and food and Third Ward and all of that was true cause Bryan is a native. 3/5.

Watchlist

The problem with my watchilist is that I don’t want to watch anything, but these are the things I want to watch eventually. Mostly them announcing that S4 of Succession will be the last season is really doing a number on me. I have no dragons or elves or zombies or anything like that. I only have this rich white family tearing each other to shreds. And now they want to take it from me. And they won’t tell me when Good Omens or Severance or Upload are coming back so like what else is there?! Oh this stuff

  • Love Is Blind (S4) – Netflix. March 24.
  • White House Plumbers (miniseries) – HBO. March. They won’t even tell me the date. Just March.
  • Rye Lane (2023) – Hulu. March 17.
  • Daisy Jones and the Six (miniseries) – PrimeVideo. I loved this book when I listened to it and I assumed I’d be all over the show but it’s already some episodes out and I just haven’t pressed play.
  • Operation Fortune (2023). Guy Ritchie has a new movie out and I’m for sure going to watch it but at the movies? I dunno. I’ll just buy it streaming straight up.
  • Ted Lasso S3 – Apple+. This will also be the final season and I’m already in my feelings about it.
  • John Wick 4 (2023). March 24.
  • Great Expectation S1 – Hulu. March 26. Cause Olivia Coleman.
  • Boston Stranlger S1 – Hulu. March 17.
  • Grand Crew S2. It’s back but on Fridays so like how am I going to watch it? I’ll catch up on Peacock.
  • Succession S4 – HBO. March 26th. WEEPING.

I also wrote down to check out Donald Glover’s new thing Swarm on Prime Video this month except it looks like a thing about being a super fan (beyhive maybe) and now I dunno. I also think I want to watch Hello Tomorrow on Apple+ but Billy Crudup is in it playing a guy selling timeshares on the moon (it’s retro-futuristic, when things are optimist apocalyptic, not just regular apocalyptic). And that’s all well and good but he’s Dr. Manhattan so…be blue. There’s also a new season of 2 Chains’ Most Expensiviest except I just realized we don’t have Vice.

Happy time change weekend!

  1. I’ve def said this before on this blog after the release of a Marvel movie, but people need to relax. These movies were never supposed to be the end all, be all of cinema—they should be fun. It’s fine if you’re not having fun anymore but being mad about it is weird. I want everyone to go outside. Or watch TAR. That’s a good, Real Cinema jam.
