Black Girl Watching 12.06.22

Omg it’s December and I haven’t posted anything. I’ve been leaning heavily on comfort television but I have a few things I’m gonna talk about quickly.

Reboot – S1 (Hulu). Reboot is funny. It’s smart humor and it’s LOL humor and Keegan-Michael Key is funny and Johnny Knoxville is funny and it’s a low stakes high payoff just fun thing to watch.

God Forbid (2022) (Hulu). This was a documentary that was advertised as a scandal between the Pool Boy and Jerry Fallwell Jr. and his wife. And it turned into how the Evangelical Christians put Tr*mp into office. It’s very interesting. Like very.

Girls5Eva – S1 (Peacock but it’s moving to Netflix). This is from a writer from the House of Fey so if you are into 30 Rock, Kimmy Schmidt, this will be very very funny for you. Plus it stars Sara Bareilles so it’s like gold stars all around for me. Two seasons are on Peacock but it got canceled and then picked up by Netflix so I don’t know how the rights work but I hope it gets a really big audience on Netflix like Schitt’s Creek did.

Don’t Worry, Darling (2022). This was not good. I was keyed up to see it at the movies but with all the gossip at the film festival premiers, I only heard about the gossip and not the movie. So when it came on HBO I was like perfect, a thing I’m already paying for and don’t have to leave my couch. Don’t get me wrong, Florence is phenomenal and The Best Chris is in it, but I didn’t like the movie. Structurally. I put on my critic hat and called it reductive. Someone on Twitter said it was Get Out for white women and that is the most accurate descriptor.

White Lotus – S2 (HBO). Speaking of things being very, very white, S2 of White Lotus ends next week. This was supposed to be a limited series but words don’t mean things anymore. S2 is in a resort in Italy and it is gorgeous but these people are even more angsty than the Hawaii season. It’s supposed to be biting commentary on the rich and there’s even a young adult that dresses in bucket hats like I did in middle school that points out the hypocrisy but everyone could be the murder victim and I wouldn’t be mad. Like each episode, a new character could die and I’d be like yep kill em. And I’m tuning in on time to watch it cause it’s mildly entertaining. Not good.

Sherman’s Showcase – S2 (AMC). 1000 times yes.

The People We Hate at the Wedding (2022) (Prime Video). This is the very rare occasion where I can’t even say the book was better. The book was bad and the movie was bad. The only thing worth watching was Dustin Milligan (Ted from Schitt’s Creek).

Lessons in Chemistry – Bonnie Garmus. I thought this was going to be more of a romantic comedy type book. I guess based off the cover? But it’s about a white woman trying to make her way though the chemistry field in the 50ths. I decided to not mentally point out that if this were a Black character it would have just been miserable? So I put that to the side for te most part and enjoyed the book. Sometimes you just have to.

I’m Glad My Mom Died – Jennette McCurdy. From the title alone I knew it would not be an easy read. The chapters are very short but it is hard to get through but you don’t want to put it down. Jennette was a Disney star in the early 2010s with Ariana Grande so everything is super super current. I can’t full on recommend it but it was a book that you won’t forget.

My watchlist is impossible but I am very much looking forward to the Call Me Ms. Cleo documentary on HBOMax on the 15th and the new (last???) season of SouthSide also on HBOMax on the 8th.
