Black Girl Watching 11.11.21.

I watch a lot of TV. And movies. And read stuff. I want to talk about it. Not like a recap but like a “okay but why…”

And I wanted a podcast to listen to that covered something like this, but I couldn’t find one immediately and despite what my friends say, I will not make one. But I do have this blog and a graphics guy so here we go.

Watching

Succession S3E4 (HBO)

Finally Adrien Brody appears. Finally. They told me Sanaa Lathan, Adrien Brody, and Alexander Skarsgård were going to be in this season and they should Sanaa like 3 minutes and that’s it. I <heart eyes> Adrien Brody. Someone on Twitter said that Kendall Roy has turned into a Girl Boss and he opened up this episode talking about he manifested the outlash coming for the company and I was like yes queen. Girl Boss highest levels achieved. Shiv is failing miserably and I’m afraid that even if her and Ken repair their relationship, combined they do not equal half the man needed to take on Logan Roy. I mean Connor was giving Shiv the strong arm. Con. Nor. But Brody appeared and is screwing over the Roys and they’re going to have to figure something out or lose the company. Also lmao at whoever they got to play the Roystar version of Tucker Carlson.

Insecure – S5E3 (HBO)

Lawrence and his decisions are tearing my internet family apart. I’m not saying Condola is right but she’s definitely not wrong. I know all of this is to get Lawrence back to L.A. and hopefully in Issa’s life as a friend only but man are they messing that kid up. If you want a solid recap of how I feel, listen to Kid Fury’s read on the most recent episode (White Men Can’t Pay) of The Read.

Curb Your Enthusiasm – S11E3 (HBO)

Leon trying to find a third Mary Ferguson has been funnier than the Larry pitching Young Larry show. It was good to see Cheryl back and Maria Sophia has me in tears laughing, but why are these episodes all like 40 minutes when I could have had an extra 10 mins of Insecure?

Real Housewives of Potomac S6E18 Reunion Part 1 (Bravo)

Candiace and that napkin dabbing tears. When will it ever end?! And why is Askale in it? She’s just gorgeous and has no drama. I need the drama. And the digs at Gizelle’s fashions.

Real Housewives of Salt Lake City S2E9 (Bravo)

Y’all. Mary is BATTY. That’s why she never cares about her wig being askew. Always askew. But we finally get to the episode when the feds are looking for Jen Shah and from the preview for this season I wanted them to arrest her for those box braids and now we get to spend the rest of the season digging into her legal troubles.

Love Life S2E1-6 (HBOMax)

I didn’t watch S1 at all. But this season picks up right where S1 ends and we never see those characters again. It’s 2016 and Marcus (William Jackson Harper) is married to a white girl, obviously, but meets Mya (Jessica Williams) and he starts to see all the cracks in his relationship. I was concerned this was going to be about William having his Black Girl Awakening but it’s not. It’s really about Marcus finding his way to truly leaning into a relationship while getting advice from his married friend, single rich friend (Stewie from Succession), his lesbian sister, and his parents (Janet Hubert is his mama!!!) who have a great relationship. I’m truly surprised at how Black this season is. I have absolutely no idea how this is going to end but I’m going to love it. I thought my love for Chidi (Harper’s character in The Good Place) would cloud me from accepting William as an actor but this is solid.

:::spoiler::::
And it’s interesting to watch Marcus deal with a surprise pregnancy right after watching Lawrence deal with a surprise pregnancy.
::::end spoiler::::

American Crime Story : Impeachment S3E9-10 (FX)

I only watched this because I was like “how are they going to make Clive Owen into Bill Clinton” and then every episode I was like “wow this is really Clive Owen!” I don’t know the hold that Ryan Murphy has on FX but this could have been three episodes. If you really want to know about the impeachment of Bill Clinton, listen to the Slow Burn S2 podcast.

Eater‘s Guide to the World (Hulu)

In 2020 Maya Rudolph narrated a travel food show and it’s perfect. Because Maya Rudolph is a pure delight.

My Unorthodox Life S1E1-5 (Netflix)

Julia Haart grew up and lived in a fundamentalist Jewish society and left in her 40s and now she’s an ultra-rich fashion mogul. The show follows her and her kids who are in varying degrees of faith crises. Basically, it’s just them being rich and they kinda teach you about fundamentalism and she’s writing a book but she’s no Tara Westover.

The Harder They Fall (2021) (Netflix)

This is a gorgeous movie. Absolutely gorgeous. And Black as hell. It does that thing where there’s modern music with and old time period. But it fits. The soundtrack slaps and Alice Smith is a saloon singer. OMG. Anyway, it’s Jonathan Majors and his gang versus Idris Elba and his gang. I will pause for all of the sexual innuendoes you choose to make. Oh and Delroy Lindo is a Sherriff. The Internet is big mad about Zazie Beetz being cast as Steamboat Mary because colorism. But they should be mad that her acting is just not good enough. I get that it would be hard against Jonathan Majors and Regina King but please try. Anyway absolutely watch this.

Re-Watching

Pluto has a Julia Child channel. And I’ve been watching it. Which is why I picked up on the Eater’s Guide show. I wonder if the advances in photography technology have changed how people plate food, or if we have changed diets so much from the 50’s food just looks different, or if we are just seeing so many types of different foods because the Internet ties us all together even if we are all just “plating” different things. In this essay I will…

No, but cooking shows are great background things plus it’s fun to watch currently famous chefs go visit Julia in her home and cook for her. Martha Stewart made a whole wedding cake and it probably retailed at $400.

If I Had Your Face – Frances Ha

Four Korean women in the same apartment complex lead complex lives (the only kind women lead) focusing on beauty, wealth, motherhood, and profession. I want to say all the social commentary that comes out of South Korea (see: Squid Game (or not cause I haven’t watched it), Parasite, etc) is harrowing and like how can I talk as a Texan?

Watchlist

In the next week I’m looking forward to:

South Side S2 (HBOMax)
Red Notice (2021) (Netflix)
Silk Sonic – An Evening With Silk Sonic
Allen Stone – Apart
The Shrink Next Door (Apple+)
The Wheel of Time (Prime Video)

The Un-Watch List

In the next week I will try to ignore or say I’m to going to get into this and we know I’m not:

Passing (2021) (Netflix)
That Will Smith Book
King Richard (2021) (Theaters/HBOMax)

I’m not anti-Will Smith, I am just very, very tired of him. He’s over-saturating my social feeds and that is hard to do right now.

My Favorite Thing This Week

Are you watching the things I’m watching?! Please talk to me about them.
