Art Is Saving My Sanity. Kinda.

I took this week off because it’s Spring Break but now the world is practicing social distancing and we’re in the house for the most part. It’s odd because typically we have regional disasters or a tragedy that affects just a region that the rest of the world can Care Bear Stare their prayers onto and then we can keep going on with life. But this is different.

I am not going to act like this is free time and I am not forcing myself to be productive but I can’t sit and watch the news all day because it is not good for my well being.

Monday, Chris Martin (from Coldplay) got on IG live and started playing piano and singing for about 30 minutes while fans from all over the world sent him requests and messages and he read them aloud and was like “you guys, let’s stay home together” and then he challenged John Legend to do it today and John (and Chrissy) agreed.

Skillshare is offering 2 free months of classes. Glennon Doyle is reading parts of her new book on Instagram. Jennifer Weiner is doing a virtual book club on Facebook. Sam Irby had to cancel her book tour, which I bought tickets for, but she is considering reading on IG as well. Debbie Allen is doing free dance lessons online.

I am not saying that I am about to pick up a new skill. I am not putting the pressure on myself to produce high quality anything during a global pandemic, but it is good that all these artists are coming together to keep our minds busy while people are sorting their way through this. I mean it’s not a snow day, it’s a virus with a side of the collapse of Capitalism (I’m still prone to existential downward spirals) but the artist are trying to keep us sane.

For now. It’s been a week.
