Untitled Entertainment Post – June – July 2018

Music

I thought about doing another New Music binge but it’s very hard to settle on anything.  There’s honestly too much everything these days and I have to pick my binges.

Everything Is Love – The Carters (2018)

Beyonce and Jay-Z made an EP together.  It’s 9 tracks.  It’s like trap Beyonce featuring Jay-Z.  The Carters are not my ministry.  Granted it’s mostly because me and Jay-Z have had a long off and on relationship for the past 20 years.

Florence + The Machine – High As Hope (2018)

Florence has new music out.  I like it.  It’s more Lungs than the others.  But more importantly, Spotify put together a complete Florence playlist including B-sides and Unpluggeds and it can get me through a solid 7:51. Glorious.

Tierra Whack – Whack World (2018)

Granted I only gave this a once over but Tierra is a musican of the Soundcloud generation.  This is not a knock.  This just means they are free to put out their own music the exact way they want it to be without studio people changing it.  Tierra made 15 one-minute tracks.  It’s different.  And worth your 15 minutes.

Summer Pack – Childish Gambino (2018)

My feelings about Donald Glover.  He debuted This Is America on SNL but before he did the song, his first song was about summertime and THAT was the song I’d been waiting to be released. (Just this past week or so I finally started to like This Is America.  I have not watched the video again.)  Anyway he put 2 summer jams out and called them Summer Pack and I enjoy them very very much.

TV (is that even what it’s called anymore?)
Series

Black Mirror – S2 (Netflix)

Okay so I started Black Mirror over a year ago.  I quickly learned I couldn’t binge it because, I mean it’s Black Mirror.  New age Twilight Zone.  The bad thing is that because it’s British, each season is like 4 episodes.  Well I started S2 and the first episode was White Bear and it gave me the willies so bad I just quit watching the show.  I finally finished S2 in June.  Whew. I’m gonna get to S3.  Eventually.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – S4, Part 1 (Netflix)

Kimmy is back!  Except this time they broke the season into 2 parts.  I did a quick binge of the first six episodes.  So good.  Kimmy and Titus and Jaqueline try to work their way through the working world.  I mean, it’s Kimmy.  One episode was a mockumentary and left me cracking up in tears.  If you liked any of the other seasons, you’ll like S4.  S4 Part 2 just got a premier date of fn January 25, 2019.  WHAT?!

Casual – S1, S2 (Hulu)

Okay so this show is very very white.  It’s about a recently divorced therapist and her teen daughter that move into her bachelor brother’s house and they all try to navigate sex and love.  The whiteness of it is mostly how incredibly candid the mom and daughter are about sex.  And the brother and sister have absolutely no boundaries.  However, I really really enjoy the show.  I did S1 in like a 3 days.  It’s a dramedy, but isn’t everything.  Anyway I like the show but I would not recommend it to anyone.  You have to find it on your own time.

Movies

Jurassic Park 2 II  (2018)

Absolute garbage.  Omg I don’t even remember the second original Jurassic Park being this bad.  Like I wasn’t even going to see it until I saw the clip of the T-Rex roaring at a lion in the zoo and I absolutely had to go see what the hell happened.  There’s a new new genetically modified dinosaur.  There’s a new new threat to the island.  There’s some shit about clones. It’s all a cluster.  Also to top it off, bottom tier Chris didn’t even phone it in on this one.  It’s just terribly bad bad terriblness. Bad.

Set It Up (2018) – Netflix

Netflix is getting into the RomCom business and I am 100% here for it.  Taye Diggs and Lucy Liu are two high powered business people who live in their offices and make lives for their assistants miserable.  The two assistants figure if their bosses were busy dating each other, they’d be happier and make everyone’s lives easier.

It’s a romcom so I mean the predicatbility is there however, it’s just a good, solid romcom.  There’s no sad down on life bits.  It’s not too long.  It’s been a very long time since the early 2000s RomComs and I hope that Netflix brings them back.

The Equalizer II (2018)

Denzel Washington is back righting wrongs and helping out the little man.  And the CIA or whatever government agency operatives find out he’s still alive and need him dead.  The kid that played teenage Chiron from Moonlight (Ashton Sanders) plays Denzel’s almost gang affilated neighbor.

Anyway, if you saw the first one and enjoyed it then this one is equally as good.  I tried to think of a play on the title but that didn’t work out for me.

Mission Impossible #Infinty (2018)

HOLY HELL THIS MOVIE IS SO GOOD OMG GO SEE IT.

Books

A Girl’s Guide to Moving On -Debbie Macomber (Audible)

This was June’s book club choice in my book club.  I finished it in July.  And the crazy thing was, it was an audio book. It’s a romance novel (just love, not heaving bosoms).  And I just don’t think romance novels are my jam.  ChickLit, yes.  Romance, it’s just new to me.  The book was a part of a trilogy but more the kind where it involves a sister of a character from another book, not like you had to read all the other books. They stand alone.

My Husband’s Wife – Jane Corry (kindle edition)

White British women and mysteries are a very very common thing and I just need to stop reading them because what is suspenseful and mysterious in London is not mysterious and suspenseful to me.  Anyway this book alternates between 1st person and 3rd person and goes from early 2000 to 2015.  The title of the book doesn’t come into play into like the last 1/3 of the book and by then you’re just finishing it to be done with it.  The plot twists are just like “huh”.  I try not to rate books low on Goodreads but I gave this one a 2 star rating.  I was into it enough to finish.

I need to spend August finishing things I never finished (Atlanta, Barry) and looking forward to more of the same (Venture Brothers, Insecure, Martha and Snoop’s Potluck).  There’s a few comedy specials on Netflix I need to watch, including Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee (OMG SUCH GOODNESS).  Looking very forward to BlacKKKlansman and Crazy Rich Asians too.

What have you been reading/watching/listening to?

  1. Great feedback and honesty. You had me rolling and intrigued.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks Comedians and Cars getting Coffee is an amazing show. Produced nicely. Coffee lover. Golden interviews.
Have you watched Altered Carbon? I was told it was very good and that’s going to be my next watch. And in regards to books, current read is Children of Blood and Bone 🔥. Dope cover work as well. Thanks for sharing. May your week be a blessing.
