Words and Pictures Wednesday 11.27.13

I rented an 85mm f/1.8 lens for 10 days.  I want to try to get some decent photos of Addy for this year’s Christmas card.  And again, I blame Pinterest for the inspiration.  We’ll see how they come out after the fact.

Anyway, I’m going to get real scientific with my photo knowledge right now.  Bear with me.  The smaller the mm, the wider the angle of the lens.

Boom.  See how sciency I just got.

Earlier this year I bought a 35 mm lens.  It has been fantastic.  It’s a little noisy, but it’s good for shooting in the house and in low light.  Which is what I do most of the time.  Then I rented this flash and I bought a cheapie Chinese knockoff that will be ok I suppose.  But for the pictures I want,  I figured I’d get the 85mm which is commonly reffered to as a “portrait lens”.  Basically it will be nice to get in people’s faces without getting in people’s faces.

So I set off to use said lens but the weather didn’t want to let me be great.

Here are your pictures of Addison if that’s all you came here for today.  Look as I shake my head at you.

ANYWAY, you see how it’s close to her face but I was sitting all the way across the living room?  It’s kinda cool and there wasn’t much light AND yes she is faking sleep.

SO I decided that I should take the camera outside and get some pictures but the weather it just craptastic.  It was like 40 degrees Sunday which is for all intents and purposes freezing but I was determined to get my money’s worth so I loaded up the Mini (ie, got in it) and drove down to the trail that runs along the bayou like a dummy that totally didn’t think “oh it’s crap fall and trees and stuff are falling apart not being pretty”.  But that’s why there is a “cloudy” setting for white balance amiright? {nudges the photogs}

This is what outside got me.

{cue picture of cold hands and runny nose}

I KID!

This one is mostly awesome because it’s straight out of the camera.  No editing besides saving it to a jpg for posting purposes.  Lur lur 85mm you are fancy!

Then I was disappointed and chilly so I came back inside and made mock pictures for what could be a featured image on an upcoming Christmas post that has yet to be drafted.

THEN I got out the flash and played around with that using trusty Astrogirl for her posing purposes.  Brownlee thought he was a big help by adding a glass of Jack.  Hello depth of field (ie: pretty blurring of background images)

So yeah I like the 85mm but I’m not completely sold on it yet.  And I can’t add it to my Christmas list anyway because I already very specifically asked for a Lensbaby kit.

We head to the country for Thanksgiving as per usual (see: here, and here) , so we’ll see how the pics go and if I’m not in a turkey hangover then I might try to remember to post Addy’s whatever this month is post.

AND I GET TO CHANGE MY RINGTONE TO THE PEANUTS THEME SONG!!!!!!!! (I also may or may not have downloaded a Michael Buble Christmas cd that can now be played in the car.  Blame Lauren.)

  1. LOVE the first pic of Addy. I want to see how the Christmas pics went. And don't you love the Bubs, as I affectionately call him? He does a Christmas special every year where he lip syncs to the CD and makes bad jokes. You should watch it!

    1. They went…ok I think. Not as Pinteresty as I would have hoped but I got good shots and I have the sads I have to take the lens back tomorrow. And now I will make note for upcoming Christmas specials.

  2. Ummm hold up…you can rent lenses? I would love for George to get a new one (we use his camera for photos), but I can't exactly force it on him, and I can only hint so much! Haha. But I think these pictures look incredible!
