Hobbie$

Brownlee has made me realize that I have some expensive hobbies.  You may or may have not noticed that I 1) blog and 2) take a lot of pictures.

This costs money.

And at first it was like:  “Hey look I can just get this free wordpress.com blog and it will be fun.”

Two years later: “I’m going to buy me a domain so I can do what I want on my blog.”

Two years later: “Oh snap it’s time to renew my hosting and guess what I got a discount ticket to BlogElevated so I need some business cards and I’m gonna get some blog swag and…”

Or “look  I can get this Canon Rebel for el cheapo on Black Friday.  It’s just a basic DSLR.  Like for enthusiasts.  That’s me. I’m kinda enthusiastic sometimes. ”

Two weeks later: “yeah I’m just going to get this 50mm lens cause it blurs the background like I want and I’m done”

A year and a half later: “yeah see I need a 35mm too because it works well in dim lighting and I don’t have to back into things to get shots inside”

And I want to take pictures for the Houston Moms Blog launch party soooooo I found this cool little place in town Photo Rental Source. IMG_20130829_194740 It’s exactly what I needed in my life! I rented this flash (Canon Speedlite 430 exII) I’ve been thinking about thinking about buying.  It’s only $*** but I could rent it for $27 for the week (I don’t discuss how much photo stuff costs with Brownlee and he doesn’t tell me how much his tennis shoes cost) and see if it’s too much flash for me or if I could get a smaller model.

Instantly I was like “this is too damn heavy” and I was irritated that it takes 4AA batteries but then I was like “OH SNAP it swivels” and “OH SNAAAAP it has a built in diffuser” and it will take some getting used to (that’s why I rented it for a week) buuuuuuut odds are I will be requesting Houston Camera Exchange gift cards for my birthday.

With the flash I can still have high quality pictures with the crappy lighting we have in this apartment (stupid energy efficient coil bulbs).  Yes the camera can compensate for poor lighting (Higher ISO) but then I get grainy pics.

Now I can get stuff like this and not feel bad about wanting to destroy the environment for better lighting:

Yay fill light!!!!!!!

And I have no set cap on what I will be spending on either blogging or photography and no I don’t want to go “PRO” in either activity.  No I don’t want to take pictures of your kid being cute and I don’t want to seek out sponsorships for my blogging needs so this page is covered with banners and what not.  I just want to bide my time creatively and then show it off for minimal praise.  Isn’t that what a hobby (and the hokey pokey) is all about?  Like people who build model airplanes don’t do it for all the fame and glory do they? Or is there some model airplane sector of humanity that I know nothing about?

What is your hobby?  What do you expect to gain from it?  Can you go pro in your hobby? Would you???

  1. Sigh. My hobbies exactly. Blogging: I got my blog redesigned , a new domain AND I’m going to a blogging conference this month.

Photography. I got a new camera in April and I own a total of 7 lenses. Do the math…..

  2. My hobbies were photography and sewing. Both of those have unintentionally turned into businesses of some sort, but I like it, and I still stand by my "no I will not take pictures of your kid" rule. My room full of fabric tells me sewing is an expensive hobby too, so I'm glad it is able to pay for itself.

  3. Yea, what Angelique said….I've turned my graphic design hobby into a career….and I still freelance as a side hustle to buy my "tennis shoes"….which are NOT tennis shoes at all, they're Retro Jordans which are basketball shoes DORK! But yea, you don't wanna know how much they cost, just know it takes about 2 flyers or a simple logo for me to buy a pair! #HustleHardOrDie

  4. Told my husband I wanted a DSLR for my birthday/Christmas. He laughed, and he doesn't know how much they cost. Blogging is my only hobby, unless trying new restaurants counts, in which I would love to go pro.I think the don't ask, don't tell thing you guys have happening sounds great.

    1. OMG to go pro in restaurant eating would be awesome. i\’m sure it\’s just a reviewer or whatever.
they have those in between cameras that take good pics i think. i just made sure i had learned how to use it since i put so much money into it. yay for photo blogs

  5. Man, oh man…I sometimes feel like I have too many hobbies, all of which I'd love to go pro at (and all of which cost me money). The narrow list:

    blogging
diy: home decor, home remodeling, crafting
photography (without a DSLR or much skill)
    renaissance festivals
    acting
    shopping

  6. I like to eat. it's a passion (as opposed to a hobby…lol). I would love love love to get paid to eat…and critique. like…I'd die happy, even if I didn't make a ton of money…I think. lol.

  7. Haha, blogging is seriously quite the investment…which of course, none of us ever realize until we're too far gone! I wish I knew about camera things, but I guess it's good for me that I let George buy the camera and take the pictures and I just let him be. I don't think I need another expensive hobby! (Shopping is a hobby, right?)
