Lake Street Dive – Bad Self Portraits
Ti messaged me on Facebook telling me I should check out Lake Street Dive. The Suffers opens for them on tour and she knows I love them, and Alabama Shakes, and thought I would like it. They have a new CD out, Side Pony, but it wasn’t on Spotify when I went to check. So I listened to Bad Self Portraits, their 2014 release.
I can’t exactly describe what the sound is. It’s old school. It’s not big band, and not doo wop, and not country but has elements of all of that.
The Wikipedia notes say:
The band have been influenced by classic pop and swing era jazz. “We want it to sound like the Beatles and Motown had a party together,” says drummer Mike Calabrese.[23]Critics describe their music as “Sounds Like: Llewyn Davis’s favorite pop group; Motown meets the Brill Building in jazzy, soulful, woulda-been Sixties chart toppers.”[24]
So exactly that.
I went in totally blind (or do you go into new music deaf?) but was very pleased with them. The lead singer has a pretty unique voice which would go great on jazz, but works well with whatever this genre of music is called. They’ll be in Houston at the House of Blues June 23, so it gives me some time to check out their other CDs and get prepared. Especially if The Suffers are going to open!
Here’s a sample:
The first wikipedia sentence had me but then I saw llewyn Davis and you know how I feel/that I haven't forgiven you yet for that mess.
But I am spotify-ing it now. So far, so good.
But #OscarIsaacSisterhood! Lmao. I think they\’re good and way too upbeat for Llewyn.
