Day 09 – Rumours

The Who:

Fleetwood Mac. Classic British bluesy lite rock.  There’s like 1000 people that have been in the band and everyone knows at least 2 Fleetwood Mac songs. AT LEAST.

The Why:

I was so pumped from Queen I figured I should try more classics just to see if there’s anything else I’ve been missing.

The Deets & Verdict:

MEHHH. I get the appeal of Fleetwood Mac and that if this has significant nostalgia for you then by all means, Dreams is probably your jam but other than it being staple songs from Sunny 99.1 (our easiest of listening stations) it just didn’t do anything for me.  I knew I knew Dreams because Stevie Nick’s voice is so recognizable and I just like her.  But I also recognized Songbird, but from the Love Actually soundtrack.

It just didn’t do anything for me otherwise.  Again, not that it was bad music it just ain’t my thing.

The Who:

Another British band.  Radiohead is the quintessential alt rock.  The alt rockiest band there probably ever was. Alt rockier than Green Day.

The Why:

See aforementioned note about Queen and Fleetwood Mac.  Also I clearly like British music.

The Deets:

I didn’t go deep Radiohead, I picked OK, Computer because I recognized a couple tracks and I figured 1997 was a good place to start.  Because of the lack of nostalgia in Dreams, I could at least place myself in a certain place in 1997 and give myself MTV references for what else I was actually listening to (note: In 1997 Bad Boy and UGK ruled my music life).

Verdict:

UGGGHHH.  My hipster heart was broken that I didn’t fall in love with Radiohead the way I thought I would.  Maybe I should have went older?  To whatever CD has Creep on it?  I don’t know. It was lots of electronica. LOTS.  And that’s ok but typically with electronica you can’t hear what the singer is saying.  And my favorite song is No Surprises but I think it must have been one of those instances where I like everyone’s cover of the song more than the song itself.

See, a long long time ago I came across a CD of Radiohead covers and it was phenomenal and maybe it was too jazzy whereas Radiohead is…not?

I was sad I didn’t love it.

Sample:

(this sounds so much better than on the CD…maybe Spotify failed me. Or technology improved)
