Island of Misfit Posts 11.4.13

I suppose this is a weekend wrap up thing but I don’t really do those types of posts so let’s just misfit it.

Eating Extravaganza

My cousin Gabby and I like food.  Correction.  We LOVE food.  We are not those people that are all “I eat to live, I don’t live to eat” and we are all “what kind of life are you living?”  And we always make plans to go eat at certain places.  But then I was like “wait.  WAIT.  Why do we fit in eating into our day?  We should make a day all about eating.”  And then we came up with Eating Extravaganza.

Last month we had seafood fondeaux at Pappadeaux, Torchy’s tacos, and then ice cream at Cloud 10 where I had nutella and marshmallow ice cream.

This month we kicked it up a notch.  Gabby saw all these Instagram photos of this donut place way out in BFE, Grove Donutz.  It was…y’all, they had a boudin kolache.  If you do not understand either of those words then you are not Southern and definitely not Texan and there are no further words I can use to describe it to you.  I also had a smores donut, and a cookie butter donut.  That’s right.  Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter on a donut.  And to top it off, they filled the hole of the donut with a donut hole for maximum donut eatage.  And I love them for it.

For lunch we made it to Ra for Happy Hour sushi.

Then, at the suggestion of Lauren (who also suggested Cloud 10) we had reservations at Underbelly.

Y’all.  Omg.  OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG.

We had braised beef tamales, warm slow dough bread with roasted butternut squash butter, Korean braised goat and dumplings, crispy bycatch collars with miso and lime (read: random fish shoulders), fried sweet potato pie with roasted marshmallow, honey panacotta with peppercorn ice cream and cookies with cocoa nibs.

eating extravaganza

We basically ate in Heaven. It was fantastic and Lauren is amazing for suggesting it and everyone should indulge themselves in some sort of Eating Extravagnza.

Doomed

I was all amped up to see Chuck Palahniuk on my birthday.  He was doing the book release for his new book Doomed, which is the sequel to Damned, which follows a 13 year old girl on her travels through hell.  I was underwhelemed with Doomed.  I didn’t necessarily have high expectation for it but I wanted it to be as good as Damned was and this was far from it.  I might need to re-read some of Chuck’s earlier works because I didn’t like Tell-All, and Pygmy was just ok.  I want to feel the same after I read Lullaby or Invisible Monsters.  But for as much as I read, I have never (purposely) re-read a book.  I can watch a movie 1000 times but not so much on book re-reading.

NaNoWriMo

Speaking of reading, I decided to take on NaNoWriMo this year.  I know! Exciting.  Terrifying.  (if you are not in the know, it’s National Novel Writing Month where crazies take on the challenge to write a book, 50,000 words, during the month of November.  I won once.  You can read the novel here.)

I finished Season 5 of MadMen Friday, November 1st and well that’s when NaNo starts.  I took it as a sign not to start any new series because 1) I am so stupid for starting MadMen when it is still on and 2) I’m still greatly involved in these characters lives now and I am not ready to get into a new relationship right now.

Anyway, I have written Tumblr posts on my MadMen feelings.

I have no real direction.  Somewhat of a plot.  I’m not sure where these characters will end up and my working title is NaNo 2013 but I mean whatever.

The goal now is words on paper.

Oh and find a widget for my sidebar that shows how many words I have.  Just like that Goodreads widget that shows that I am nowhere near my reading goal for the year.  I blame 1984.

  1. I am SO SO glad you liked Underbelly! I referred it to a coworker who hated it (WTF, right?) so I have been nervous ever since! I kept refreshing IG so I could see your meal (not creepy at all…) and I am so glad you enlightened me to this donut place. I am going on Sunday; it's already planned.

I am LOLing about your inability to get involved with another set of characters. Good luck on the novel!

  2. If I did not have the, "fear of fat", I was definitely indulge every week. You are making me hungry!! Grrr!!

  3. According to MH's definition of a foodie, I'm sure y'all would also qualify. "If you sound like you're having an orgasm while eating, you must be a foodie".

  4. I still have not been to Underbelly, but now I absolutely need to go! It sounds amazing! Also, I totally want to do an eating extravaganza because that sounds like the best day in the whole world.
