Black Girl Watching 04.13.23

Watching

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish (2022). We respect the Shrek Cinematic Universe in this household even though it takes like 10 years for a sequel to come out. Addy could quote the original Puss In Boots when she was still in pampers. Anyway, this one is existential as hell. He’s literally being chased by death. It’s fantastic.

Shrinking S1 (Apple+). I finally finished Shrinking and I absolutely loved the characters. It’s really a nice, good, funny, show and if you like Scrubs and Ted Lasso feel-good but not overly sweet things, watch it.

John Wick 4 (2023). Holy balls yes. And they’re coming out with some prequel series on Peacock later this year. I’m telling you, aside from Days of Our Lives (yes I still watch every day), Peacock has been a clutch streaming service.

Beef S1E1-2 (Netflix). Now, I’m sure I will be done with this show very soon because it is a 30-minute watch on Netflix and I love Ali Wong and Steven Yeun. Basically, they have a road rage incident and take it to the extreme. So it is a very dark comedy with a soundtrack any late-millennial will love. I’m trying not to binge it but I know I’ll be done with it soon.

Swarm S1 (Prime Video). Okay. So. I finished it. A 7-episode series about a young, Black girl obsessed with a Beyonce-esque pop start circa 2016. When her best friend dies, she snaps and takes out her vengeance on anyone who talks shit about the pop star online. We’re talking murder. So a young Black pop star obsessed serial killer show. And while I want there to be so much Black content that each show doesn’t have to be perfect, this was nowhere near a perfect show. It was fine. I don’t recommend it, even if you are like me and love Donald Glover (he created/produced along with Janine Nabers). It wasn’t that it was gory cause it wasn’t, it was just fine. A rainy stuck in the house weekend watch.

I also finally finished Girls5Eva and it ended okay but I am very glad it’s moving to Netflix for a new life. I’m watching Succession S4 in real time and MY GOD THEY ARE NOT MESSING AROUND THIS SEASON. I’m very much waiting for the finale and reunion of Love Is Blind this weekend. WHAT MESS. Honestly, March Madness messed up my tv watching. I’m not sad.

Reading

The Neighbor Favor – Kristina Forest. This was a cute contemporary romance about a girl that works at a publishing house who falls in love with an author through email but gets ghosted and he ends up moving into her building. It was too many tropes and a little too long so like 3.5/5 rating units.

A Cowboy to Remember – Rebekah Weatherspoon. Traditional second chance romance with California Cowboys. There are two more in the series that I’m sure I’ll check out from the library app shortly.

The Three Mrs Greys – Shelly Ellis. This was not my typical type of read (see: a lil ratchet) but I had it on my list cause I think I saw it on Twitter or something. Anyway, after Cyrus Grey is shot, three women rush to his aid only to find out they are all married to the same guy. There’s gangs and prostitutes and affairs with soccer coaches but then it just ends abruptly and I will not be reading the sequel. 3/5 rating units. I was glad the library had it and I finished reading it.

Watchlist

Omg it’s impossible. Like I write down all these shows and I don’t put a dent in them.

  • White House Plumbers (HBO/HBO Go/HBOMax/Max whatever they want to be called). This was supposed to come out in March but Warner Bros is ASS and can’t get anything correct and now I have to wait until 5/1.
  • Tiny, Beautiful Things S1 (Hulu). I never read the book but Kathryn Hahn is in it and that’s enough. Someone on twitter was like “I feel like everything has been named this in the past 6 years” and yes it’s white lady book material so Little Big Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers, Sharp Objects, Little Fires Everywhere, all those things. Same vibe.
  • Love & Death S1 (HBOwhatever) 4/27. This is about that lady Candy that got accused of murder. Jessica Biel did a series on Peacock that I didn’t watch. I’m watching this one cause HBO and Elizabeth Olsen.
  • A Black Lady Sketch Show S4. (HBOW) 4/14.
  • The Night Agent S1 (Netflix)
  • Mrs. Davis S1 (Peacock). Okay this comes out 4/20 and at first I was in cause I thought it was Jodie Comer but it is not. It’s Betty Gilpin. Fine. Then I read the premise and it’s “Sister Simone partners with her ex-boyfriend Wiley on a globe-spanning journey to destroy Mrs. Davis, a powerful artificial intelligence” AND it’s by Damon Lindelof (Watchmen TV, Lost, The Leftovers) so I’m sold.

Best Thing on the Internet

The other day NPR tweeted a link out to Trina’s Tiny Desk concert. And someone was like “ooh Juvenille should do a Tiny Desk” and Juvie was like “I don’t know what that is” and everyone threw links at him and then he goes 10k retweets and I’ll do it. 6 hours later:

Ok tell me (spoiler free) what you’re watching these days.
