The Emmys are on and I do not want to add too many shows to my list of things to watch but…I’m gonna give Barry another go. It was good but I got behind mid S1 so…
Imelda.
Suddenly we had a tropical storm Thursday. It was…rough. Hurricanes usually give you a bit of warning and you can restock your items that you keep on hand. But this was incredibly sudden and the streets flooded so fast. The schools were closed Friday to give everyone a recovery day. The city had to take a mental health day and a general breather because when we left the house in the morning it was fine and then very very suddenly it was not.
Watched.
Designing Women is streaming on Hulu. It’s almost as if Julia Sugarbaker invented a read. It’s so fantastic.
Succession – S1 (HBO)
I finished S1 and it is a very, very good show. Very good.
4 Weddings and a Funeral – S1 (HULU)
Now, this is supposed to be a limited series (10 episodes) and I do not want them to keep it going. It ended. I enjoyed it. I needed the lightness of it. It’s like if Love Actually was a show and that’s a good thing for me.
That Chappelle Special (Netflix)
It raised a lot of eyebrows on Twitter but Twitter is a very tiny echo chamber. Also, the special is hella problematic. When we saw Dave on tour with Jon Stewart, I know he did some of these jokes. They were marginally funny. The special is okay but as I write this like four weeks later I can’t remember not a single joke from it.
This Way Up – S1 (HULU)
Aine has had a rough go of it and her sister Shona is dropping her off at a rehab facility. The show gets going with her life four months later and she’s working as a English Language teacher in London. It’s a quick binge, 6 30-minute episodes. It’s very Irish (Aine is pronounced Ahn ya and Sharon Brogan is Shona and she’s always extremely Irish). It’s not LMAO funny but I enjoyed it. It’s a good family dramedy.
Documentary Now – S1 (IFC)
Bill Hader and Fred Armisen spoof various documentaries. I watched Episode 1 a long long time ago and it threw me off so I didn’t finish. And then last weekend I did the whole first season. It’s funny but not funny for everyone. That’s generally the case when Fred Armisen is involved. Seth Meyer is a head writer and Lorne Michaels produces it so it’s basically scripted SNL.
Brooklyn 99. Yes I already binged the whole series but Addy is into now so we’ve started a rewatch at S3.
Listened.
I listened to Over My Dead Body podcast (S2) and it was an odd story that I was sorta into but mostly nobody was killed? I thought it was a murder podcast but it is not?
Brittany Howard – Jamie
Frontwoman for Alabama Shakes, Brittany Howard has come out with a solo album. It’s…not Alabama Shakes. It’s more rock than bluesy. I don’t dislike it but again, it’s not Alabama Shakes.
Witnessed.
I saw John Mayer in concert. He doesn’t have a new album out, he’s just doing an end of summer tour. He sang a couple songs from every album. Even the mountain man stuff I didn’t listen to when we were on a break. There was no opening act. It was 2 solid sets and an encore and it was glorious. GLORIOUS.
I saw Van Hunt in concert. Twice. Van announced via Instagram that he was going to be in Dallas. And I was like “that’s not far and I haven’t seen him in 10 years (literally ten years) so let’s make the drive.” and I bought the tickets for me and Ariel. And the next day or so Van announced via Instagram that he would also be in Houston and so we bought the tickets to that.
When you go to small venue concerts the artist will just get off the stage and stand off to the side and take selfies with you. And in Dallas we were “you didn’t sing Precious like we asked on IG” and he was like “my bad I’ll sing it tomorrow.” AND THEN HE SANG IT IN HOUSTON. And dedicated it to us. He was like “this is for two special fans!” and I recorded it on my phone and because it was small venue it was very clear sound (except rocky because I was singing and swaying but I’m not posting it so it doesn’t matter).
Read.
Very Nice – Marcy Dermansky (audiobook).
A well to do white family befriends a Pakistani writer and things go awry. This is one of those stories with a bunch of different point of views. And it’s very liberal. As in they are like “We’re the good people who voted for Hilary even though we’re rich.” But mostly everyone was a dick. And honestly I’d be fine if everyone stopped saying books were “funny”. It wasn’t funny.
Resourced.
After the John Mayer concert someone was amazed that he did 3×5 acoustic (I too was amazed). A commenter was like “the show was recorded, so check on archive.org.
Y’all. This is a free resource where people record shit and put it online. I knew that like every website is always archived blah blah. I did not know concerts were. I assume there is a research based need for this, hence the dot org but mostly I just sat and streamed concert audio for a long time. Spoon ACL shows to be exact.
Blog.
This here blog turned 8 on September 15th.
WHAT?!
It’s fall TV time and I’m not going to act like I’m going to watch a lot of shows but The Good Place final season starts this week and I’m already sad about it. I’m currently in the middle of 3 books, which is unprecedented but as soon as I finish one of them I would have met my goal for the year (24 books). It’s also peak planner buyer time and I have no clue what I’m going to be doing for next year. I mean yes a bullet journal and yes this new Happy Planner that I bought but WHAT ELSE! That’s the question.
I know this sounds very biased coming from your mom, but I love your blogs!!!! You save me a lot of time from researching. LOL!
I heard Sucession was really good. I’ve also heard so many people say good things about The Good Place. I need more time to do nothing so I can binge it. LOL!
When I tell people that I read multiple books at one time, they think I’m insane. They also think I’m insane when I say I don’t waste my time finishing books that I don’t like just for the sake of finishing.
