Picking up where I left off two weeks ago, I’m finally watching the American Gods S2 finale. Fifteen minutes in and it has been absolutely not enough answers, only more questions and I have heard nothing about an S3. I bought the graphic novel but I really need to read the book. When I realized that I had only read books written by women so far this year, I decided I was going to keep that going but Neil Gaiman owes me answers that the TV writers are obviously failing to provide.
Watched.
White Boy Rick (2018). White Boy Rick is about a 15 year old white boy in Detroit that became a police informant in the 80s. And when he was dumped by his handlers, he became a drug dealer. We wanted to see it when it came out but it clearly wasn’t a must see and now it’s streaming on Starz so we figured why not. It is…not good. Listen to the Crimetown S2 podcast instead.
I Think You Should Leave – Netflix. This is ridiculous sketch comedy show. So it’s like half of the sketches you just watch them and the other half have you doubled over short of breath laughing. I can’t even fully recommend it because it is so crazy.
Dead To Me (S1) – Netflix. Christina Applegate’s husband was killed in an accident and she meets an odd new friend in a grief support group. It’s 10 episodes. 30 minutes a piece. And I devoured it in two sittings. It’s what I wanted Big Little Lies to be…and I loved Big Little Lies. I’m very much into flawed women TV shows.
Wine Country (2019) – Netflix – Amy Pohler stars and directs this comedy about a group of old friends taking a trip to Napa Valley to celebrate one of them’s 50th birthday. Starring a bunch of my faves from SNL – Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell, and Tina Fey. It’s perfect for sitting on the couch, drinking wine, and watching Netflix on a Friday night. No tears.
Band Aid (2017) – I saw a trailer on Instagram and wrote it down as a movie to watch and now it’s on Netflix. Zoe Lister-Jones wrote, directed, and starred in a movie about an early 30s couple that have dead end jobs and fight all the time and decide to turn their fights into songs and start a band to rekindle their relationship. I enjoyed it but that’s it.
Real Housewives of Potomac – Season 4 just started and I already said I like flawed women and this batch are beautiful and terrible. I love it so much. Also there’s a show on Bravo called Texicanas about rich bitch Latinas in San Antonio that might be my new jam.
Read.
Normal People – Sally Rooney (audible). I saw a longlist for the 2019 Women’s Prize for Fiction (UK…I do not know if there is an american version???) and decided that this would help me on my above mentioned quest for the year. Two of the books I loved, Circe, and My Sister the Serial Killer were on it so my next pick was Normal People. It just became available in the US and it was on my Goodreads list so I used my credit for the month. It’s written very very simply. No unnecessary big words. Very descriptive. No alternative points of views even though there are just two main characters. It follows a consecutive timeline. All these are important for me right now because so many books refuse to follow those rules. Anyway it’s about two young kids that can’t stay away from each other. But then it gets into BDSM, depression, abuse, a possible eating disorder??? And then it just stopped. It didn’t end. It stopped. 3.5 rating units. And it’s mostly because the narrator is Irish.
All the news I can about the Alabama Abortion Bill. I thought I was going to be ready to finally start S2 of Handmaid’s Tale but nope. Gilead is here.
This Article on The Lily about how a lady didn’t buy books for a year to read the books she already owned. I’m not going to commit to something so outlandish but I did enjoy the article (it’s mostly comics).
