Joy and Misery

I watch the news. Probably too much. I’m aware what is going on in the country.  And it’s shitty.  Oooooh so shitty.  I wallow.  I want there to be a Millennials Make A Wish like program where you get 5 minutes to sit in Michelle Obama’s lap and she just hugs you and pats your back and says we’ll be okay.

Until that comes, here are some good things.

Jackson Publik (co-creator of Venture Brothers) did an interview for I09 Gizmodo discussing the series, an upcoming 376 page bohemouth of a book full of pictures and backstories and yadda yadda about the book.  Jackson talks about how the show was created (2004) at a time when nerds were still obscure and there was no Iron Man and Marvel.  BUT he also acknowledges that because of nerd culture the show is able to continue and now more people can get more references.

see how Doctor O look familiar to some Marvel jackass doctor?

I am very very excited but I’m not sure if I want to preorder or go to a local comic shop…who am I kidding I’m going to a local comic shop to get it.  Jackson also confirmed that Season 7 was in production.  YOU HEAR THAT.  Season 1 aired in 2004. Season 7 is in PRODUCTION.

Following Instagram Tags

Lemme tell you.  Social media is a cesspool of terrible most of the time.  Used to be for solace I’d skip over to Pinterest and just look at nice pictures all day.  But now it’s all sponsored posts for things I don’t care about.  My solace is now Instagram tags.  The truest form of hashtagging is to be able to search.  So if you like notebooks, you will go to the tags section, type in “notebooks”, and anyone who put #notebooks in their photo caption will be in your feed.  It’s glorious.  Of course I have a whole paper Instagram account (@brewritesetc) but still.  Anyway you can just follow tags now.  It’s fantastic. For now until they screw it up.

Alexis Rose saying “David”

Some blessed soul made this supercut of Alexis Rose calling her brother’s name on Schitt’s Creek and now I’m about to watch the whole series over again it’s the best.

Ruby Bridges

Right so, on Juneteenth I asked Addy if she knew what the holiday was.  My internet friends taught me that if you need to broach a difficult subject with a child, you start with what they already know or already think and then go from there.  I asked her if she knew about slavery and she said a little and Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves but someone shot him.

Okay. So I tell her that in 1863 Lincoln freed the slaves but then word didn’t get to Galveston, our beach, until 1865 and they were the last slaves to find out so it’s a reason to celebrate.

Addy then asked “why are white people always doing stuff to black people?  I mean, look at Ruby Bridges! She was just a kid and all she wanted to do was stand up for herself.”

Addy was big mad.  Cause she’s a seven year old black girl so she can relate. I’ve ordered a Scholastic Ruby Bridges to come to the house and omg yes the youth.

I hope you have a thing or three that are not shit.  And I hope you find the energy to keep fighting. Whew.

I got one friend

  1. “Addy then asked ‘why are white people always doing stuff to black people?'”

Addy stays asking the important questions. I feel like we’ll ask that a lot more often in the next 10-20 years. *sigh*

  2. That Alexis video made me smile SO BIG. Thank you.

This is the first year I have EVER heard of Juneteenth. Which, I mean, I guess is progress that I heard about it at all but it’s really crappy and slow progress.
