Childish Gambino – Awaken, My Love
Right. So after giving us Atlanta, Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino, gave us Awaken, My Love. It’s only been out a few days but it’s all I’ve listened to and it is…
A while ago on this very blog, I gushed about Donald’s writing skills. I mean he wrote for 30 Rock, and did Community, and stand up specials, and gave us Camp, and even though I never gave it all any listening time, Blame the Internet. So I’m well versed in all things Donald, but Awaken, My Love, was unexpected.
It’s like all Donald did the past year was live in Atlanta and write and listen to Sly and the Family Stone and Funkadelic and Prince and Outkast from those years when all they listened to was Sly and the Family Stone and Funkadelic and Prince.
In a word, this album is funky. It’s like stank face funky.
I love it. Even the bits that I can’t decide if I love it or if it’s just so different that I can’t figure out what to call it (see; California).
It’s not backpack rap, or melodic rap, or some singing and some rapping. It’s no rap. Some of the songs are just instrumental (see; The Night Me and Your Mama Met, featuring GARY CLARK JR ON GUITAR WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT). I don’t really have any more words. Here’s a sample {explicit}.
Streaming on Spotify. Available to buy wherever you buy music and on AwakenMyLove site. There’s a physical CD and the vinyl will be available some time next year.
Ok, you've sold me on this album, simply by mentioning that Gary Clark Jr is featured!!!!!!
