A catch-all cause I just realized my last post was about a gap year but I didn’t mean that as “I’m not blogging”.
Adele
I saw Adele in concert on election night. Adele is the best British friend you need to have in your life. She’s amazing and at first we didn’t know what to expect because well, she’s not an entertainer.
It was amazing. We had the “cheap seats” and I’m not even mad about it and it will probably be another 7 years before she comes to town again but I won’t be mad about that either because I got to see her this one time. All in all, the concert gods have smiled upon me in 2016.
I will complain about the merch though. I didn’t buy a t-shirt cause I hated the designs but I mean everything can’t be perfect.
Moonlight
As of this weekend, Moonlight has been released nationwide. It’s a coming of age story of Chiron, a young, quiet boy, who lives with his mother in Miami and has to deal with all the things involved with love and finding out who you are.
This movie is phenomenal and I haven’t stopped thinking about it. It’s getting shit in the black community because 1) people are still mad that Birth of a Nation didn’t instantly win an Oscar. First I will note that I didn’t support Birth of a Nation because a) I do what I want and b) I’m still black no matter what I support but mostly c) I’m eternally conflicted between separating art from the artist and Nate Parker for all intents and purposes is trash so I kept my $9. and 2) it speaks about homosexuality which a lot of black people don’t like because a) cherry-picking Bible thumpers and b) toxic masculinity. (I speak about this on my friend’s podcast University College )
I digress. The movie is beautifully shot. It’s one of those stories that is very simple and to some people that might seem boring. I get it. The acting is great. And probably most importantly, there is not a single white person in the movie. Why is that important? Because I’ve seen 6000 independent films with absolutely no person of color. See also: #OscarsSoWhite . See also: every single Woody Allen movie (but Bre! you just said Nate Parker is trash! Isn’t Woody Allen also trash? YES BUT I AM COMPLICATED AND I LOVE ANNIE HALL).
Go see this.
Disney Cruise
We went on a Disney Cruise last week. It was amazing. I am infinitely terrified of the ocean. It’s basically space on earth and only 15% discovered and who knows what’s down there. Absolutely nobody knows and that’s the terror. Also at night you can not tell the difference between the sea and the sky and even though I am “safe” in my house as I type this I am retroactively terrified all over again.
Anyway Disney is magic and I won’t be writing a “how to take a Disney Vacation” post that bloggers do because I mean, I just won’t. You will spend too much money and you will eat too much food and it will be the best trip and you won’t regret any of it.
The Election
As I mentioned, I was at the Adele concert while the country was watching the initial election results. I assume it was like that Dave Chappelle sketch from SNL. I don’t know. The service in Toyota Center was bad. That Tuesday morning I assumed that things would be fine but there was also a tweak of panic that we had come this far and there was a legit chance that Trump could be President and well, here we are.
We were lucky enough to be on a boat for 5 days soon after with very little internet connection but when we got back to WiFi I saw nothing had changed and things were still shit and we are in the dystopian society that was once only entertainment.
I alternate between still wishing for the meteor and shaking my head in disbelief. Just…how? This is not lament that our candidate didn’t win. It’s the panic of what’s to come and how 1984 will things get. (I suppose Hunger Games is appropriate as well? I didn’t read the books or watch the movies). Whitney is telling me how great The Handmaid’s Tale is but I’m too scared to read it.
