Charm or Whatever

My birthday was Wednesday.  And Addy woke up and she and Brownlee handed me cards.  She took one look at it and recognized her handwriting and took the card back from me to draw on it some more.

Before they left for daycare Brownlee told her to tell me happy birthday and she outright refused.  To where it got awkward.  She just would not do it.  Dora, Dora gets told “happy birthday” everyday because she’s stuffed and dressed in a hat and coordinating birthday outfit.  Tough titties for Mommy.

Friday night we went to YaYa and PawPaw’s house for my birthday cake and pizza as per family standards.  Addison left the room when they sung me happy birthday.  She wants no part of these shenanigans where adults get sung happy birthday too.

Saturday we went to a birthday party for a friend’s child that I share a birthday with.  She’s 3.  Addy enjoyed the party and sang “happy birthday” with the chorus of children and Elmo at the party.

At this point I was having a hard time not taking it personally.

It’s Sunday night.  She just returned from a weekend of hanging out suckering YaYa into whatever.

I put Addy in the bed and read a Dr. Seuss book to her (sidenote: please remind to donate Oh Say Can You See because just really Dr. Seuss?!).  I leaned over the siderail and told her “ok it’s time to go night night” and gave her a kiss.

Her:  Mommy, happy birdday.

Me:  Me? Are you telling me ‘happy birthday’?

Her: (smiling ever so sweetly) “yes Mommy.  Happy birdday.

Me:  Ok thanks but you still have to go to bed.

Her: (rolls eyes and buries face into pillow)

Really?  A pity happy birdday to stay up a few minutes later?!  Three days after utter refusal?  Toddlers are jerks.  Don’t let anyone tell you different.

  1. Your child is so sassy in the best way. At least you can be secure in the fact that she is definitely not a pushover!

  2. Ha! Hilarious. I would say it gets better, but my bf's 6 year old son gets very jealous any time it's someone else's birthday besides his! I can't tell you how many times I've heard "No fair, why can't I get presents??"
